Easiest Way To Drape A Sari

Sari is a timeless classic Indian women’s wear, which enhances the beauty of Indian women; it is one of the oldest known items of clothing that is still in use and is used by almost seventy percent of Indian women. Sari is a draped fabric created from a single piece of fabric, which is wrapped around a women’s body in different styles. They are made of cotton or silk, but now are also available in nylon as well.

Saris are beautiful, brightly colored and decorated in many ways; some are just plain and some are decorated with vibrant embroidery and sequins. One end of a Sari will be more decorated than the other. The more decorated end will be the end on show as that end will draped over the shoulder. There are two more components you will require with the sari: the petticoat and blouse. The petticoat is made from plain cotton and is important for tucking the sari in. Petticoat of the same color is preferable, but a different color can be used as this piece of cloth will not be seen when you wear a sari.

There are different styles of draping a sari, and these styles differ according to the region, social class, ethnic background, and personal style. The ends of sari can be thrown over one or both shoulders depending on the style.

The most popular way to drape a sari is the Nivi style:-
  • Once you have your petticoat and blouse on, then take the least decorative end of the sari and tuck it inside your petticoat, see to it that the decorated part of the sari is facing outwards.
  • Wind the sari clockwise and keep tucking it in around your waist. Depending on the length of your sari fold or pleat the material four to six times. The folds should be of the length of your fingers.
  • Once you have tucked the folds in the front of your petticoat, wind it round again, and keep tucking in as you go. Once you have reached the front and the most decorated end, drape the remaining decorated end over your shoulder.
  • The most decorated end should be on your shoulder, it’s your choice whether you can leave the end loose or by using a safety pin, pin it up to the shoulder of your blouse. I would suggest using a safety pin is a good option as it gives you more freedom of movement and you do not have to keep pulling the draped end over your shoulder again and again as it may tend to fall.
And there you go, you are almost ready with your latest sari style and then you can accessorize it with bindi, jewellery and sandals to give that most elegant and graceful look.

Color oops! Colorful Clothing Options This Holi

Holi - the festival of colors; the bringing in of the new; the arrival of spring and the celebration of good over evil. Holi is probably the one Indian festival that is the most loved and the most celebrated. Holi was traditionally the festival where there were no barriers - caste wise or sexually. People rush out into the streets and pump colored water over each other. Throw water balloons on passersby - even strangers. Everything is forgiven. It's a happy day filled with joy and merriment. So what do you to wear to an occasion like this? True it is a celebration to paint yourself in the colors of joy but what would be the appropriate dressing for the celebration?

Women have to worry about several things while dressing up for the festival of Holi. Remember you are going to be splattered with color. Most colors are cheaply made and are purchased off the road. They are high in chemicals. While you cannot control who throws color over you, you can control your choice of attire. If you are going out to play Holi or if you are generally planning to move about on the day of Holi, I suggest you invest in a chiffon sari and preferably one that is not too expensive. If you are willing to discard the sari after use then simply choose a plain color. If on the other hand, you are planning to re use the sari, pick out one which has some kind of abstract print on it. The risk lies in the fact that you will also get splattered with plenty of water. Chiffon tends to get transparent under water. So beware of this. Wear a thick blouse so that you conceal everything that needs to be concealed. No matter what you do, you probably will end up bearing your midriff so take great care of your sari choice.

A salwar kameez is probably your best clothing option. Once again, I suggest you choose chiffon or nylon. They dry up quickly and are easy to take the color off. In addition to that, they also come with a dupatta. You simply drape your dupatta over your upper body to prevent any wardrobe malfunctions. Never select light colors. They stand the risk of getting transparent more easily. Instead choose dark colors. Dark does not necessarily mean dull. Stay away from light shades and pastels but colors like bright blues, purples, deep greens or a combination of colors is ideal for playing Holi.

If you are heading out only to witness the fun or for a 'Holi' party, dress yourself up in a sari. Remember though that you may stand the risk of spoiling your dress. Dress up according to the theme of your party. Most importantly remember to have fun and partake in the enthusiastic spirit of the festival.

So enjoy This Holi in colorful saris and have fun.
